What to Expect During the Dental Implant Process
Posted on April 13th, 2025
If you’re missing one or more teeth, dental implants offer a permanent solution that looks, feels, and functions like natural teeth. Understanding what to expect during the dental implant process can help alleviate any anxieties and prepare you for each step. At Family Dental Practice, we’re committed to guiding you through this transformative journey with personalized care and expertise.
Initial Consultation
The first step is scheduling an initial consultation with our experienced dentists, Dr. Will and Dr. Kyle. During this visit, we will:
- Evaluate Your Oral Health: Conduct a thorough examination of your mouth, including X-rays or 3D imaging, to assess bone density and structure.
- Discuss Your Goals: Understand your expectations and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
- Create a Personalized Treatment Plan: Develop a plan tailored to your specific needs, including the number of implants required and the estimated timeline.

Preparatory Procedures (If Necessary)
Depending on your oral health, preparatory procedures may be needed to ensure the success of your dental implants:
- Bone Grafting: If there isn’t sufficient bone mass to support the implant, a bone graft may be performed to rebuild the jawbone.
- Tooth Extraction: Removal of damaged teeth that will be replaced by implants.
- Treatment of Gum Disease: Addressing any periodontal issues to create a healthy foundation.
Our Services page provides more information on these procedures.
Implant Placement Surgery
Once you’re ready for the implant placement:
The Procedure
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia or sedation is administered to ensure your comfort.
- Incision: A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone.
- Drilling: A hole is carefully drilled into the jawbone to place the implant post.
- Placement of Implant: The titanium implant is inserted into the bone.
- Closing the Incision: The gum tissue is stitched back in place over the implant.
Aftercare
- Pain Management: Mild discomfort is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
- Diet: Soft foods are recommended for a few days.
- Oral Hygiene: Maintain gentle brushing and rinsing to keep the area clean.
Osseointegration
Over the next few months, a process called osseointegration occurs:
- Bone Fusion: The jawbone grows around the implant, anchoring it securely.
- Healing Period: This can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months, during which you’ll have periodic check-ups.
Abutment Placement
After osseointegration:
- Minor Surgery: A small incision is made to expose the implant.
- Attachment of Abutment: A connector piece called an abutment is attached to the implant.
- Healing Cap: Sometimes, a healing cap is placed to shape the gum tissue.
Placement of the Prosthetic Tooth
Finally, the custom-made artificial tooth (crown) is attached:
- Impressions: Molds of your teeth are taken to create a crown that matches the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth.
- Attachment: The crown is either screwed or cemented onto the abutment.
- Final Adjustments: Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable bite and natural appearance.
Post-Procedure Care and Maintenance
Your new dental implant requires care similar to natural teeth:
- Oral Hygiene: Brush twice daily and floss regularly.
- Regular Check-Ups: Schedule routine visits to monitor your implant and overall oral health. Book an appointment through our Contact Us page.
- Healthy Lifestyle: Avoid smoking and limit foods that can stain or damage your teeth.
